Coding terms made simple
What is a programming language?
A set of rules for writing instructions that a computer can follow. Python, JavaScript and Java are all programming languages.
What does “run” mean?
Running code asks the computer to carry out your instructions. The result, called the output, is shown next to your code.
What is the console?
A text area where your program prints messages, such as results or errors, so you can see what it is doing.
What is a compiled language?
Some languages, like Java, C++ and Rust, must be translated into machine instructions before they run. On CodeHub 20 this happens for you in the cloud runner.
Why can some languages run without internet?
HTML, CSS and JavaScript are built into every browser, so they run on your device. Other languages need extra engines or the cloud runner.
Built for the way you learn and work
Students & beginners

Tutorials & content
Record clean walkthroughs from a simple, distraction-free workspace.
How every language runs
| Mode | Languages | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Instant in browser | HTML · CSS · JavaScript | Runs natively in your browser. No download, results appear immediately. |
| In-browser runtimes | Python · TypeScript · SQL · Lua | Powered by WebAssembly and JavaScript engines that load once on first run, then run locally on your device. |
| Secure cloud runner | Java · C · C++ · C# · Go · Rust · Kotlin · Swift · PHP · Ruby · Dart · R · Scala | Compiled and server-side languages run in an isolated sandbox and return the output to you. |
Powered by proven technology
WebAssembly runtimes
Pyodide brings Python and sql.js brings SQLite straight into the browser tab.
Judge0 cloud execution
An open-source code execution engine runs the compiled languages in sandboxed containers.
Firebase Authentication
Email and Google sign-in, with private profiles protected by Firestore security rules.
